When Eddie Redmayne began dating Hannah Bagshawe in 2012, he felt the need to warn her about embarking on a relationship with an international movie star. At the time he had a series of roles lined up that looked, on paper at least, like they’d take him all over the world.

‘I said to her, “You know, with my life there could be a lot of travel, we could be nomads” – but she was all up for that,’ he recalls. ‘I then made Les Misérables, which was set in Paris, The Danish Girl, which was set in Copenhagen, and Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, which was set in New York…’ And? ‘And all of them were shot in Watford.’ Or Ealing. Or Slough, even.

Bagshawe and Redmayne can’t have been too disappointed. The pair married in 2014, the same year the thoroughly Cambridge-set The Theory of Everything, for which Redmayne would win an Academy Award, was released.

In a couple of weeks he will return to the big screen with the follow-up to Fantastic Beasts – the Harry Potter spin-off written by JK Rowling and produced by the same team as the Potter films, in which he starred as Newt Scamander, an eccentric English wizard zoologist who ends up fighting for good against evil with a motley band of acquaintances.

When he read Rowling’s script for that film’s sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, he noticed that much of the action takes place in Paris during the années folles (‘crazy years’) of the 1920s. Bagshawe was thrilled. Redmayne was suspicious. ‘Nope, Watford again.’

Eddie Redmayne is in early talks to star in Amblin Entertainment’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” sources tell Variety.

Aaron Sorkin is writing and directing, and Sacha Baron Cohen is also in talks to join. Marc Platt is producing the pic.

Following his directorial debut, 2017’s “Molly’s Game,” Steven Spielberg saw Sorkin as the perfect candidate to take over directing duties on “Chicago 7.”

The film is based on the infamous 1969 trial of seven defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy and more, arising from the countercultural protests in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The trial transfixed the nation and sparked a conversation about mayhem intended to undermine the U.S. government.

Redmayne will play Tom Hayden, the co-founder of the Students for a Democratic Society, who was best known for his role as an anti-war, civil rights, and radical intellectual activist in the 1960s, authoring the Port Huron Statement and eventually standing trial in the Chicago Seven case.

An A-list ensemble had always been a goal for the movie, with talent like Will Smith being considered during the time of the project’s first brush with development. This time around, Sorkin is also looking for big talent.

Set to reenter the world of “Harry Potter” as Newt Scamander in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” Redmayne sought something on the prestige level as his next project, as the actor has always struck a balance in the roles he pursues. Prior to being cast in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” he won an Oscar for playing theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in Focus’ “The Theory of Everything.”

“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” bows on Nov. 16. Redmayne recently filmed the Amazon Studios movie “The Aeronauts,” which reteams him with his “Theory of Everything” co-star Felicity Jones.

Parkside School in Cullman County was full of magic Thursday morning as the “Today” show and several of the stars from the upcoming “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” came to the school as part of a Wizarding World Day that showcased its Harry Potter-themed classrooms and hallways and recognized the work of its teachers and students.

Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Zoë Kravitz, Ezra Miller and Callum Turner all stopped by the school on a promotional tour for the film, and got a tour of the classrooms and hallways before speaking to the school’s students.

“What your teachers have done here, what the community has done here, to rally behind this extraordinary school and inspire you guys to do such things, it has literally blown our minds,” Redmayne said. “So thank you so much for having us.”

Making a stop in Baileyton on a promotional tour that is spanning the globe is also a unique experience, Law said.

“It’s exciting enough to be a part of a film franchise or world that came from these books that goes all around the world. We were just in China and saw people there really embrace it, get so excited by it,” he said. “To also be a situation like this, where it’s actually had a real grassroots influence on a community… it’s incredibly exciting.”

All of Parkside’s students were thrilled to see the stars of one of their favorite movie series, but that excitement flowed both ways, Miller said.

“Inspiration never just runs one way. This is going to power us through the next four weeks of our lives as we’re so deep into the world of jet lag that you start to literally forget who you are,” he said. “In that moment I know that I’ll refer to this memory, because this is a reminder of what this is, and what J.K. Rowling’s legacy is in this world.”

As part of the ceremony, the stars also presented a check for $25,000 from Warner Bros. to the school.
